“The Lantern” Research SA (TLR), a Swiss-based company which operates under the brand FinLantern, recognises the importance of keeping client information confidential and is committed to safeguarding your privacy. This Privacy Policy outlines the types of information and personal data (“Data”) we gather from your use of, or that you may send when using, this Swiss-based website (“Website”), how we use it, with whom we might share it, the means by which we keep it secure, and the choices you (“You”) have about the information You choose to share with us.

Processing and Use of Data

Data: How We Collect It

The Data we collect may be captured from a variety of sources. These sources include, but are not limited to:

  • voluntary submissions through the Website (e.g. registrations at the FinLantern Community, registrations at events/presentations promoted by FinLantern, responses to surveys, etc.);
  • freely available public information on the Internet (e.g. public profiles on common social networks, corporate websites, etc.);
  • contacts with our commercial staff (e.g. business cards, on-site registrations at events/presentations promoted by FinLantern, requests for information about our company or our products/services, inquiries about employment opportunities, etc.);
  • subscription to the FinLantern Newsletter.

Events registration

If you sign up to attend one of our events, we will ask you to provide your professional details. This is so we can assess your suitability to attend our event, contact you to let you know if you meet our criteria and share with you all logistical information.

If you register for one of our events, we will use this information internally for liaising with you and ensuring that you are added to appropriate workshops and seminars at the event.

Sharing of data with sponsors and partners. How Data is shared depends on FinLantern’s role in the event.

When FinLantern organises an event on behalf of a third-party company, this is stated on the event registration page. In that case, registration data is passed on to that company, which processes it as an independent controller under its own privacy policy.

For events promoted directly by FinLantern, registration data is not normally shared with sponsors. In specific cases, for example with the main partners of an event, registration data may be passed on to one or more partners: where this applies, it will be clearly stated on the event registration page, where your consent will be requested.

Sponsors and potential sponsors may also receive information on the profile of attendees, such as job title and company, without contact details. In any case, your full contact details are shared with a sponsor when you choose to connect with them, as described below.

Event app, meeting requests and lead scanning

For selected events, including the Lugano Finance Forum, FinLantern provides an event app to help delegates, speakers and sponsors connect before and during the event.

Delegate directory and messaging. When you register for an event, your profile (name, job title, company and profile picture, if provided) will be visible in the event app to other registered delegates and to the event’s sponsors and partners. They may send you messages, introductions and one-to-one meeting requests through the app. You decide whether to reply or accept. The directory can only be viewed within the app. It cannot be downloaded or exported, and we do not provide full attendee lists to sponsors. You can hide your profile from the directory at any time in the app settings or by contacting us.

Badge scanning. Your event badge carries a QR code. If you let a sponsor or exhibitor scan your badge, for example at their stand, you agree that your contact details (name, job title, company, email address and phone number) will be shared with that sponsor, much like exchanging business cards. Badge scanning is voluntary: you are free to decline a scan, and declining has no effect on your participation in the event.

Use of your data by sponsors. Sponsors can download the contact details of the delegates whose badges they scanned, or who connected with them through the app, and may use these details to follow up with you after the event. From that point, each sponsor acts as an independent data controller and processes your data under its own privacy policy, including adding your details to its own contact or marketing databases, where permitted by applicable law. You can object to further communications from a sponsor at any time, either through the unsubscribe link in their emails or by contacting the sponsor directly.

Withdrawal of consent. You can withdraw your consent or object to the sharing of your data with sponsors at any time by writing to subscriptions@finlantern.com. Withdrawal does not affect sharing that took place before it. Retention periods for event data are set out in the “Data Retention” section. This processing is carried out in accordance with the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

There will be a photographer and/or videographer at our events. The material may be used for future event show guides, on our websites or on our social media channels. If you do not wish to be filmed or photographed, you can tell our staff at the event or write to subscriptions@finlantern.com; on request, we will remove images in which you can be identified.

Data We Collect

The types of personal information we collect depend on the purpose for which You are accessing the Website (e.g. to register at the FinLantern Community, to register for an event, to learn more about FinLantern and our services, to inquire about employment, etc.). This information may include, but is not limited to:

  • your name, physical and email addresses, phone number(s) and company; and
  • if you are submitting employment information through the Website or by email, any additional employment-related information that You choose to provide (e.g. CV).

Data: Why We Collect It

  • TLR collects certain personal information in order to better target the recipients of specific email campaigns and send information only to those who may be interested.
  • Moreover, TLR may use it to respond to inquiries about our products and services, to provide You with investment information and tools, to process and respond to employment-related inquiries and job applications, to perform marketing-related and statistical activities, and to supply other administrative services.
  • Finally, the collection of certain data may be mandatory, being connected to the fulfilment of legal obligations and/or of the contractual relationships established with You.
  • Where local laws allow, we reserve the right to use Data for the purpose of marketing events/presentations promoted by FinLantern that we believe might be of interest to the client.
  • We may collect information concerning your operating system, browser type, domain name, IP address and website usage data when you visit our Website. This Data is collected primarily for the purpose of monitoring the usage and performance of the Website.

Legal Bases for Processing

We process your Data on the basis of:

  • the performance of our relationship with You, e.g. for registration at the FinLantern Community or for an event;
  • your consent, where required by law, e.g. for non-essential cookies or for the disclosure of data to the partners of an event;
  • our legitimate interest, e.g. to promote our events to financial professionals, to ensure the security of the Website and for photography and video recording at events;
  • compliance with legal obligations.

Data Retention

FinLantern Community account data is retained for as long as the account remains active or until you request its deletion; accounts inactive for more than 5 years may be deleted. Event-specific data (e.g. app messages, meeting requests and badge scans) is retained for a maximum of 24 months after the event and then deleted or anonymised. Some data may be retained for longer where required by law (e.g. for accounting obligations).

Accuracy of Your Personal Information

You are responsible for periodically checking that your personal information is up to date and correct.

You are also responsible for keeping safe the username and password used to access your Data.

How to Update Your Personal Information

If You want to check, update, modify or cancel any personal information gathered about You through Your use of this Website, You can access your Data directly by signing in at the FinLantern Community (http://community.FinLantern.com/) with your username (email address) and personal password (which is encrypted and which we are not able to know).

Use of Cookies

TLR may use cookies and encrypted session cookies to set user preferences and to keep the user logged in. This information allows us to personalise the user experience and improve the quality of navigation on our Website. Cookies do not normally reveal the identity of the individual user directly, but identify the device used by that user.

Moreover, TLR may use cookie technology to estimate aggregate visitor numbers and aggregate data transfer volumes, to identify pages that attract particular interest, and to make general improvements. Cookie technology is also used to allow people to move more quickly around our Website. If you visit our Website and use certain important functions, we may send cookies to your computer. Cookies are strings of information that are sent by a website and temporarily saved in your computer’s memory. If you refuse cookies, some pages may not function fully and you may be unable to access certain information on our Website.

The cookies used on the Website fall into the following categories:

  • technical cookies, necessary for the Website to function (e.g. login and preferences), which do not require your consent;

Data Security

  • Where We Store and Process Data. All the Data we gather from this Website is initially transmitted, processed and stored on Swiss-based servers, to which access is strictly limited.
  • Your Data may subsequently be transferred to other countries for further processing, storage and/or use by TLR and/or our affiliates/service providers in order to deliver information to You. Where Data is transferred to countries that do not ensure an adequate level of protection under Swiss or European law, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses or, for the United States, the Data Privacy Framework.
  • Protection of Your Personal Information. TLR puts commercially reasonable security measures in place, and requires our selected service providers to do so as well, to protect against unauthorised access to, or unauthorised alteration, disclosure or destruction of, personal information. In particular, TLR and its service providers have taken appropriate technical and organisational precautions to ensure that only authorised persons can access these servers, and have taken particular precautions with regard to the protection of our technical environment (e.g. using industry-standard firewalls, password protection and encryption systems).
  • TLR may use third-party email service providers (e.g. MailChimp, which may process data in the United States) to send you emails. To allow us to send our emails through these service providers, we provide them with your email address and sometimes with your name, company, country and other information. These service providers treat information about You in accordance with their own privacy policies. In the footer of every email we send you, we always state the service provider used for the email campaign and give you the option to unsubscribe immediately. These service providers may also use certain technologies, such as pixels and web beacons, in the emails sent through them. These technologies allow them to track whether you have opened or clicked on our emails and, if so, the date, time and IP address associated with the open and/or click. TLR does not separately identify, or collect, any information that is specific to children.

Your Consent

This Privacy Policy describes how we process your personal data. Where processing is based on consent, this is requested separately (e.g. through the cookie banner or the checkboxes on registration forms) and can be withdrawn at any time. Please note that TLR’s systems are not currently configured to accommodate “do not track” requests.

Changes to the Privacy Policy

TLR may change this Privacy Policy at any time. Changes take effect upon publication on the Website; in the case of significant changes, we will notify registered users. We encourage You to review this Privacy Policy regularly. The date of the latest update is shown at the bottom of this page.

This Privacy Policy is governed by Swiss law, without prejudice to applicable mandatory provisions, in particular the GDPR for users resident in the European Union.
